Program Philosophy
The St. Augustine Center For Living is committed
to delivering programs and services of a habilitative and rehabilitative
nature that address the individual needs of developmentally disabled
adults, who require supervision because of a demonstrated dependence
concerning their inability to perform independent life-skills
or social functions.
Clients are exposed to experimental, age appropriate
opportunities in critical developmental areas which include, but
are not limited to self-help skill proficiencies, social/behavior
skills, and activities of daily living.
Normalization
The St. Augustine Center For Living recognizes
that normalization promotes implementation of the developmental
model. Consequently, we endeavor to create an environment in which
the normalization principle can operate effectively, i.e., that
each client experiences an existence which is as close to normal
as possible, by affording the client patterns and conditions of
daily living approximating the normal patterns of mainstream society.
By employing an interdisciplinary approach to determine developmental
status, every effort is expended to assist the client to acquire
and maintain those skills which enable him/her to cope more effectively
with the demands of one’s condition and one’s environment.
Home-like Environment
Meaningful development programs addressing specific
behavioral and skill deficiencies are utilized to elevate our
clients’ levels of physical, mental and social efficiency.
The St. Augustine Center For Living utilizes an environment that
is home-like as opposed to an institutional environment which
approaches the norm, without compelling the client to participate
in experiences and situations which are unrealistic in terms of
his/her performance.
Training Programs
Group activities afford an excellent opportunity
for individualized training. Training programs at the Center For
Living are systematic and intensive and specify the behavioral
objectives, methods used, training schedules and persons responsible
to the individualized training plans. Carefully controlled leaning
is sequenced and follows a systematic developmental progression
which utilizes specialized procedures designed to improve skills
as part of the development and maintenance of a meaningful, effective,
individual program plan.
